And in this article, we will share tips on what you should pay attention to when installing a bath on a podium and what materials you can use for this.
Podiums in bathrooms can be distinguished by their functionality. Depending on it, they can be divided into two main groups.
1. Bearing. They are designed to support the weight of the bath itself, which means they are made of durable materials, such as concrete or brick. Usually, this option is difficult to implement in an ordinary apartment, since it significantly increases the load on the floors and requires special permission. Bearing podiums are more often used to fix acrylic products.
2. Decorative. They represent a niche in which a bathtub and all plumbing are installed. Access to communications is carried out through special hatches. Such options can be made from lighter and more flexible materials, since the bath is on the floor, and not on the structure itself.
Podiums and purpose may differ. Some options perform a purely decorative function, others are designed to divide or zone the room.
You can make a podium for a bath from different materials. Most often, one of the following options is used.
1. Beam. A podium made of wooden logs is relatively light and strong enough. Usually, for greater stability, it is sheathed with plywood on top. You can build such a structure without much hassle. However, the timber podium also has significant drawbacks: it makes a lot of noise when walking, and the material is afraid of water. Therefore, either additional layers of noise and waterproofing or a high-quality finish with waterproof products will be required. It also does not hurt to impregnate the wooden elements with a hydrophobic composition at the installation stage.
2. Foam blocks. Also a very quick and cheap option to create a podium for the bath. It is possible to cut out a detail of any shape from foam blocks, which means that it will not be difficult to create an original design, as well as to fit the elements with high quality. However, foam blocks also do not like high humidity. The structure will have to be further strengthened with glue or sealant and provided with a waterproofing layer or plastered with cement.
3. Expanded clay concrete. This material is widely used for pouring floors. It is strong and durable, not afraid of high humidity and temperature changes. Such material can be used to create a supporting structure. However, its weight will be significant.
4. Metal sheets. It is also possible to equip a bath podium from metal sheets fastened together. Such a structure is usually sheathed with drywall so that it does not make unpleasant sounds, and is covered with tiles or finished with other material on top. Usually this is a fairly durable option, which is also considered optimal in price.
You can place the podium in the bathroom in different ways. However, a very large room is required to install it in the center. Other options are more common.
1. Corner podium. It is suitable for almost any space. The podium and bath will not take up too much space and will look very organic.
2. Horizontal installation in a niche is used when it is necessary to visually expand a narrow elongated room. If the room has a window, you can place a podium next to it.
3. Single wall installation is usually used in fairly spacious rooms. In this case, a shorter surface is often chosen. A podium installed near it will balance the proportions of the bathroom.
The location option will depend on the parameters of both the bath itself and the future podium. So, square models look more organic at the corner. But round or oval ones look very impressive, located in the center or next to one of the walls.
If you do not have any building skills and at the same time you need to build a supporting structure, it is better to immediately contact a professional. The master will independently calculate the required strength and weight of the future podium and offer one or more options for its installation.
If you already have certain skills in the construction of such structures, you can make a podium yourself. For this you need:
1. take measurements of the future frame: its inner part in terms of the volume of the bathroom and the outer one, based on the estimated area of the podium;
make a frame according to the measurements taken (the guides are installed first, then the desired material is put in);
2. degrease the floor and fix the frame with liquid nails;
3. install the bath inside the structure so that the sides of the plumbing are above the podium;
4. close the joints between the elements with special corners, if required;
5. seal seams and joints.
After the podium is assembled and the plumbing is installed, the structure is left for several days for the sealant to set and the materials to take their final shape. Only then the podium is trimmed and contact with water is allowed.
